The Darley Family

When Kambri was a baby we had the opportunity to meet with the Darley family, who have a son with Microtia-Atresia.  When he was 10 years old he had reconstructive surgery.  We sat with them for 3 hours that night.  We asked thousands of questions that only a mother going through the same thing would know how to answer.  I asked Derrick lots of questions about how he felt, what he could hear, and what he liked/disliked.  We discussed the emotional, physical, financial and medical things that come along with Mictrotia.  When they left that day I felt relieved, justified, happy and comforted.

Last week we invited them into our home once again.  We discussed the surgeries, compared stories and changes in procedure within the last 12 years.  Derrick (now 22 years old) talked directly to Kambri this time.  She was nervous but soaked up every word he said.  He showed her his scar from where they removed the rib, told her what to expect before & after surgery and shared his story of courage.  They shared pictures of his "peanut ear" which looked very similiar to Kambri's nubin.  They even brought her a gift bag full of activities to do during her hospital stay.  She was pretty quiet the whole time they were there but as soon as they were gone she recounted every detail.  It was a very special day for our family.
